Watchman Podcast Response
Listening to this podcast was a bit of a struggle for me because I’ve never seen Watchman or read the graphic novel, so sorting through the information was very confusing at times. However, I feel like I was able to take away certain parts of the podcast that relate to how Lindelof and his team developed and created the show. One important thing that Lindelof stressed throughout the creation of the show was keeping historical information accurate. He did a lot of research in colonization and conquering especially in relation to Vietnam and his experience in Hawaii. It seemed like he was very thoughtful in how he did the world-building for the show and wanted to make sure all the information he presented was historically accurate in relation to the graphic novel and in real life. I also thought it was interesting how he would present origin stories in flashbacks having them relate to nature vs nurture. He carried over the idea from the graphic novel of legacy and how it relates to what one inherits. Lindelof also wanted to make sure that he could make something original, often asking himself how can you make something original from something that already exists but keeping the story. He did through the ways mentioned and also while building the story picked which clues would be picked up from the original to use and which can be ignored to tell the story he wanted to.
I can definitely get inspiration from his research diet and process for my senior project, which will be a VR experience related to depression. For my project, I’ll also be needing to do a lot of research about depression in historical, social, and other contexts. While I want to focus partly on my experience in my project I also will be taking a lot of input from others and learning about how different people experience depression and how others perceive it. With this collection of information, I’ll be able to sort through it taking parts that I think will help my project and using it for inspiration and further research. I also want to look into projects that may be similar to this one, still making it an original but seeing how others have presented information similar to mine and how I can change and grow it.
